    This course is designed for people who have completed at least 2 years of Conversational Spanish. A more complex look at Spanish Grammar is a part of this class.  Learn even more about different Spanish cultures throughout the world. Improve your reading and comprehension as well. In this conversation course, you will be given the opportunity to communicate using the Spanish you have been learning through former classes. This practice will enhance your travel, work, and everyday interactions with Spanish-speaking people.

    Prerequisite: Completion of "Spanish Intermediate B" is necessary to take this class. You can also enroll with instructor permission. Please reach out to our office to receive instructor permission 925-424-1467.  

    Required Text: Advanced Spanish Grammar, by Marcial Prado available online. Please purchase the book prior to the first class meeting.

    Planning a trip to France? This practical and engaging course is designed for travelers with no prior French experience who want to feel more confident navigating real-life situations abroad. We’ll cover essential language skills such as greetings, polite expressions, and how to get around using public transportation. You’ll learn how to check into hotels, buy tickets to museums and events, and—most importantly—how to read and order off a French menu!

    The course also includes cultural insights into common courtesies, safety tips, and helpful strategies for visiting popular attractions and discovering off-the-beaten-path experiences. Whether you’re heading to Paris or Provence, this class will help you make the most of your journey.

    By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate common travel settings with recognition of appropriate responses and what they are being asked for. Read basic signs, menus and understand cultural norms in France.  No prior French required.

    Materials: Students will be provided with a packet and are asked to bring a pen or pencil. The packet is at no cost to students.

  • Ceramic Sculpture for Beginners  NEW!

    This is an easy, hand-building ceramics course in two parts, catering to students with little or no previous ceramics experience. In this course, you will create a beautiful wall sculpture in clay, guided by an art educator, Thomasin Dewhurst. Participants will be instructed step-by-step in a series of two lessons that cover preparing, working with, and modeling in clay, creating an original sculptural design, working with under-glazing and glazing techniques, and learning about kiln-firing. To give time for the pieces to be kiln-fired before glazing, the course is divided into two lessons that are two weeks apart. There will be a short meet-up after the final kiln-firing so that students can collect their finished pieces. This course is a fun, relaxed way to learn about working with clay, resulting in a beautiful art work you will be proud to display.

    Chi Running: Focus on Form and Run Smarter not Harder. This workshop is for runners of all abilities. Whether you’re a new or seasoned runner, your form can make all the difference in how you feel during and after your workout. Chi Running, based on the principles of Tai Chi is designed to maximize energy and minimize strain, helping you feel energized as you increase your distance and duration. But Chi Running isn’t just about enhancing endurance and speed, it’s also about minimizing impact and reducing the risk of injury. Run smarter, not harder. Learn the essentials of Chi Running —a technique that combines Tai Chi principles with the sport of running. At the workshop, you’ll learn to run in a way that feels natural, protects your joints and builds endurance over time. You will be guided through exercises and drills designed to leave you with a clear sense of what the Chi Running technique feels like in your body. You will learn and practice how to: develop, maintain, and body sense good posture and alignment and how to avoid over-using your legs by engaging the power of your core and moving forward from your center. You’ll also learn focuses and unique tips and visualizations for efficient arm swing, cadence and more to help conserve energy, vary speed and avoid injury. We will not be doing lots of running, so no matter what condition you’re in, have no fear.

     

    Location will be either the indoor or outdoor track, depending on weather conditions.

    The Chi Walking technique emphasizes walking form—the proper and effective biomechanics of walking and draws from the movement principles of Tai Chi to make walking easier on the body by promoting energy efficiency and injury prevention. How you walk dictates how stress moves through your body while walking. Discover how efficient walking techniques distribute less stress on your body. Through innovative walking drills and exercises you will learn and practice how to: develop and maintain good posture and use the power of your core to create smooth whole-body walking which reduces the stress and strain on your hips, back, legs, knees and feet. Learn how to use cadence, cooperate with the pull of gravity, engage efficient arm swing for different walking speeds, how to loosen joints for flexibility and more. The class is suitable for walkers and hikers of all conditioning and experience levels interested in enhancing the health benefits of walking and avoiding injury.      Looking to improve your golf game? Learn with the guidance of an expert and with the support of other community members looking to improve. This course will analyze your grip, set-up, alignment and the full swing, and the instructor will provide video analysis and feedback on what to improve. You will learn various short game techniques including pitching, chipping, putting, and sand play. The last focuses on the theme of course management and involves playing 9 holes of golf. This course is for beginner to intermediate skill-level players. 

    About your Instructor: Paul Sapsford is the instructor for this class. He has taught the Las Positas College Golf class for over 10 years, played collegiate golf in the UK, and was certified by the USGT as an Associate Teaching Professional in 2017.

     

     

    Please note the following:

    • Anyone over the age of 14 is welcome to join.
    • This course is held at the Las Positas Golf Course. The exact meeting place will be communicated in an email prior to the beginning of class.
    • There is a small additional fee to purchase driving range golf balls. They are $7 per bucket, which are purchased at Las Positas Golf Course. Please bring your clubs, but if you don’t have any, we can provide.

    Setchu-ryu Jujutsu is an eclectic system of martial arts comprised of several distinct systems blended together into one seamless style.  The primary systems incorporated in the system are Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Tenio DeCuerdas Eskrima, Lua Halau O Kaihewalu, though students will also learn concepts from Kosho Ryu Kenpo, Aikido, and Rillamas Serrada Escrima, and Wa Ko Ryu Jujutsu.
