- Ceramic Sculpture for Beginners NEW!

This is an easy, hand-building ceramics course in two parts, catering to students with little or no previous ceramics experience. In this course, you will create a beautiful wall sculpture in clay, guided by an art educator, Thomasin Dewhurst. Participants will be instructed step-by-step in a series of two lessons that cover preparing, working with, and modeling in clay, creating an original sculptural design, working with under-glazing and glazing techniques, and learning about kiln-firing. To give time for the pieces to be kiln-fired before glazing, the course is divided into two lessons that are two weeks apart. There will be a short meet-up after the final kiln-firing so that students can collect their finished pieces. This course is a fun, relaxed way to learn about working with clay, resulting in a beautiful art work you will be proud to display.

Have you thought about painting or drawing but do not know where to start? This course is for adult beginners, or those who would like to refresh their basic art skills, to draw and paint in a traditional, realistic style. With the guidance of local artist Thomasin Dewhurst, you will practice line drawing, shading and blending, proportion, perspective, composition and tonal balance. Then, we will take the drawing skills and apply them to painting practice. Using mainly acrylic paint, we will learn specific painting skills, such as color theory, color-mixing, impasto painting, glazing, scumbling. Selected History of Art references will be included to demonstrate certain aspects, and your instructor will include demonstrations as you learn. Students completing this course will have the skills to better paint on their own, or even participate in more advanced workshops and art events, such as Paint Livermore.

This course will analyze your grip, set-up, alignment and the full swing, and the instructor will provide video analysis and feedback on what to improve. Alameda County's Del Valle State Park provides an ideal opportunity to observe the fall migration and post-breeding journeys of birds. Setchu-ryu Jujutsu is an eclectic system of martial arts comprised of several distinct systems blended together into one seamless style. The primary systems incorporated in the system are Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Tenio DeCuerdas Eskrima, Lua Halau O Kaihewalu, though students will also learn concepts from Kosho Ryu Kenpo, Aikido, and Rillamas Serrada Escrima, and Wa Ko Ryu Jujutsu. Students will be taught how to apply and receive throws safely, apply and escape locks, manipulate joints, control an opponent’s balance, strike quickly and effectively, activate nerves, take advantage of vital points, and use and defend against weapons.
