Sterile Processing Technicians, also known as Central Supply Technicians and Medical Equipment Preparers, are crucial members of the healthcare team. They work in hospitals, outpatient care centers, physicians’ offices, dental offices, and other ambulatory health services. They are responsible for decontaminating, disinfecting, and sterilizing medical instruments and equipment. Additionally, Sterile Processing Technicians assemble, distribute, and store medical devices and equipment needed for patient care. This 80-hour classroom-based program prepares students for entry-level careers in sterile processing through instruction and training in cleaning, decontamination, and distribution of medical instruments and equipment. Certification through CBSPD* or HSPA** is highly recommended.
*This program meets the requirements and specifically prepares students to sit for the CBSPD exam. Hands-on hours in sterile processing are not a requirement for the CBSPD exam provided you successfully complete the Sterile Processing Technician program. This certification prepares you for entry level employment.
** HSPA requires 400-hours hands-on experience in a sterile processing department. Students may sit for the exam and receive a provisional credential provided they complete 400-hours of hands-on experience within 6 months of passing the exam.
