

Have you ever been captivated by the beauty and strength of hula? Come discover for yourself the fundamentals of Hawaiian hula. Hula is an ancient tradition dating as far back as the 8th century. Despite various attempts to suppress it, hula survives. In this course, you will understand why hula endures, learning basic steps and gesture; plus, some of the history and stories that hula captures and maintains for Hawaiians.
This course is appropriate for anyone —male and female— who wants to learn more about, not only hula movement, but also the philosophy of hula that can impact your life positively.
Through this class, you will come away with
- having learned the basic steps and gestures
- an understanding of the purpose and philosophy of hula
- having learned one Kahiko hula (ancient-style hula) and one Modern hula
Materials provided or required:
Attire required: Please dress comfortably in leggings or shorts with a T-shirt. Bring a pareau (sarong) or hula pā‘ū (skirt) to wear over.
Materials: $20.00 fee to cover the cost of material handouts. Please bring cash or check the first day. Bring a 3-ring binder, pencils, paper and an audio recorder.
Age range: This class is recommended for those 18-50 and in good physical shape.
